A modern portable pressure washer is suitable for a variety of jobs. For example:
- Cleaning dogs
- Bathing horses
- Getting mud off mountain bikes
- or even cleaning a utility vehicle
So you could be forgiven for wondering how one machine can be versatile enough to manage all these jobs. One of the most often asked questions is
What is the water pressure ?
Is it powerful enough to clean a car, and gentle enough to care for a dog?
Water pressure is only part of the consideration. With high-volume mains-tap washers, the higher the pressure the more force there is in the water coming out of the jet.
The ‘force’ of water is caused by the flow, and with the nozzle opened up there is lower pressure measured near the pump. When the nozzle is tightened in order to provide a fine mist for showering the pressure reading is highest.
So it’s important to compare like with like.
The real consideration should be the cleaning performance and effectiveness of the machine. Which is down to the water-flow and how the design of the spray nozzle on the gun. You could have a different product with a similar PSI but is less effective because of the design of the spray-gun or diameter of the hose.
Pressure washers that are attached to mains water are also generally powered by motors that are attached to a mains supply. A portable pressure washer has the benefit of its own water supply and is independently powered meaning that it can be used in a greater variety of situations than a patio-washer.
